Join Wiggy of WIGWOOD for one on one Kumiko tutorial conducted online. Wiggy will lead you through the entire process of making the square Jigumi Kumiko template and the famous ASA-NO-HA infill pattern based around the use of Japanese hand tools. On completion of this introduction to Kumiko, you will have the confidence to go on and explore the beautiful and rewarding art of kumiko based woodworking patterns on your own.

 

The tutorial will be conducted over 2 x 3 hour sessions providing personalised guidance. You will be introduced to a range of Japanese tools and how to use them in completing the Kumiko coaster/small trivet. Beginners through to experienced woodworkers will learn new skills! 

 

There are four options to participate in the Basic Kumiko Course based on your available resources. You can use your own tools or try before you buy and hire WIGWOOD tool kit.

Cost - $449.00 + $150.00 Bond = $599.00

Bond - $150 (refunded once returned to WIGWOOD)

Tool List

 

This is the minimum requirement to be able to participate in the Introduction to Kumiko Course. Items underlined (a-i) can be purchased through Japanese Tools Australia (https://www.japanesetools.com.au). Or you can use Western equivalent for the plane and chisel. Your tools need to be sharp and ready to use. If you have any questions, please email 

 

  • Kumiko strips (supplied by WIGWOOD)

  • Kumiko Chamfer jigs, Asa-No-Ha set, 3 angles, 2 x 22.5, 45, 67.5

  • Square Jigumi - Kumiko cutting Jig (specify left or right handed)

  • Dozuki  (Japanese Pull Saw) (210 mm) cross cut.  

  • Kana (Japanese Block Plane) (42 mm) Or western equivalent apron block plane

  • Oire Nomi (Japanese Butt Chisels) (3 mm and 24 mm) Or Western equivalent bench chisels

  • Marking Knife

  • Wooden mallet or small hammer

  • Precision square (small 75-100 mm)

  • Rule (150 mm and 300 mm)

  • F Screw Clamp (x 2)

  • Quick Clamps (x 2)

  • Pencil

  • Masking Tape (24 mm)

  • PVA Wood Glue

  • Workbench or sturdy table that you can use to clamp jigs to

  • Sand paper and sanding block (or a power orbital palm sander)

 

IT - Online participant requirements (hardware/software)

 

  • laptop with inbuilt webcam (this webcam is for instructor/student interaction)

  • Seperate webcam    (this camera will focus on the project)

  • Microsoft teams application (free online)

Steps to prepare for course

On purchasing a course option, WIGWOOD will be in contact with you to discuss the following:

  1. Set mutually agreeable date/time for the 2 x 3 hour sessions.

  2. Kumiko strips and any tool/webcam hired requirements delivered.

  3. Arrange a pre course test of IT (webcam/Microsoft teams) a few days before tutorial starting.

  4. Conduct the 2 x 3 hours tutorial sessions.

  5. Return any hired components. (Australia Post, include additional insurance and sign on delivery option)
    return cost is at your expense. 

  6. Refund bond.
